Training on Advances in Applications of Nanotechnology

About the Training Programme Course

Nanotechnology deals with the manipulation of atoms, molecules, or molecular clusters to create functional materials and devices with enhanced & desirable properties. The first use of the concept of 'nanotechnology' was in "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom", a talk given by physicist Richard Feynman in 1959. Nanotechnology, no longer remain a theoretical science rather it has gained the status of applied science being used in multidisciplinary field. Agriculture and Food Production are no exception to it. This has realized the potential of nanotechnology in each stage starting from crop production to consumption. In India, Department of Science and Technology (DST) has initiated the Nano-Mission to foster the research activities in this field. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in collaboration with state agricultural universities has initiated Consortium Research Project (CRP) on Nanotechnology to boost the research in the field of nanotechnology and its application in agriculture. ICAR-CIRCOT has done pioneering work in the field of nanotechnology and has developed more than a decade of experience and expertise in synthesis & characterization of nanomaterials and its application in textile finishing development of nanocomposites etc. In 2015, ICAR-CIRCOT has established India’s First Nanocellulose Pilot Plant. With this background, advanced trainings are being arranged to share the knowledge with diverse stakeholders. This training module on 'Advances in Applications of Nanotechnology' is 14th in the series, designed to impart basic and advanced knowledge of nanotechnology and its applications.

Training on Basics of "Knitting and Knit Garments"

About the Training Programme Course

India is the second largest producer of textiles and garments in the world with a market size of around US $137 billion. The Indian textiles and apparel industry is expected to grow to a size of US $ 223 billion by 2021. Knitwear is an important market segment of industry that has become popular among all men, women and kids. The Indian knitting industry is one of the most innovative global producers of knitwear products. Today, there has been a tremendous change in technology. A large number of sophisticated computerized knitting, embroidery machines, dyeing machines, state of the art sewing lines, CAD/CAM systems, large scale processing machines are used in Indian knitting industry. The production speeds have raised in recent years and the buyers are more and more conscious about the quality of garments manufactured in the mills. Hence it is necessary to know the various aspects related to knit fabric production, garment production and quality control of fabrics and garments. In view of this, ICAR-CIRCOT is conducting a training programme on “Basics of Knitting and Knit Garments” for the benefit of industry personnel, researchers, academician and students.

Objective

  • To impart knowledge on basics of knitting and apparel technology
  • To equip the trainees with fabric analysis and quality control practices in knitting and apparel industries
  • To acquaint the trainees about new advances in knitting and apparels.

Course Content

  • Introduction on knitting
  • Types of knitting
  • Knit design & structure
  • Advances in knitting
  • Processing of grey knitted fabrics & apparels
  • Process of tie-dye fabric
  • Quality control of knits

Training on Absorbent Cotton Technology at CIRCOT, Mumbai

About the training programme

Cotton, the king of natural fibres is the major raw material for the textile industry. As much as 94% of the total cotton fibre consumed is used by the spinning sector for making yarns. However, a significant quantity of cotton, about 6% is also utilized for technical applications, such as for the manufacture of “absorbent cotton”. Absorbent cotton (popularly known as cotton wool or surgical cotton), is a medical product used to absorb body fluids. Apart from medical applications, absorbent cotton is also used in various non-medical applications especially beauty and personal care sector with products like wiping pads, ear buds etc. The demand for absorbent cotton is on the rise with increase in population and boom in the healthcare and cosmetic sectors. There is a good market potential both in the domestic as well as in the export market. India, being the largest producer of cotton in the world with a vibrant textile industry has abundant supply of the raw material for the preparation of absorbent cotton and can be a prominent producer of this important product in the world. This training programme on Absorbent Cotton Technology has been designed by CIRCOT for the benefit of personnel from industry, entrepreneurs as well as researchers to help them in understanding various processes involved in the production of absorbent cotton and testing methods for checking the product quality as per Pharmacopeia norms.

Objectives

  • To acquaint the trainees about basic and advanced chemical and mechanical processes involved in the production of absorbent cotton
  • To apprise the trainees about the market potential of absorbent cotton
  • To introduce the trainees to various testing methods for absorbent cotton

Course content

  • Chemistry and preparatory process of cotton fibre for absorbent cotton
  • Eco- friendly preparatory processes for absorbent cotton
  • Mechanical processing for preparation of absorbent cotton
  • Environmental issues in the absorbent cotton industry
  • Demonstrations on absorbent cotton preparation and testing
